Conversation Space with Helen Keller

Critic: Amela Parcic
Fall 2019 | Core Studio
St. Louis, MO

“Suddenly, I felt a misty consciousness a soft something forgotten — a thrill of returning thought; and somehow, the mystery of language was revealed to me. I knew then that W-A-T-E-R meant the wonderful cool something that was flowing over my hand. The living word awakened my soul, gave it light, hope, set it free!”
-- Hellen Keller, The Story of My Life, 1903

Water and touch are central to this project. The form emulates the shape of flowing water, and the representation employs watercolor to create a memorial for Helen Keller and park space for blind visitors. Without the typical communication of speaking and listening, the site itself becomes a language, connecting and creating a conversation with visitors and the surrounding environment.

Drawing of the Site; drafting, water color, collage
