I knew then that W-A-T-E-R meant the wonderful cool something that was flowing over my hand. The living word awakened my soul, gave it light, hope, set it free!” -- Hellen Keller, The Story of My Life, 1903 Water and touch are central to this project. The form emulates the shape of flowing water, and the representation employs watercolor to create a memorial for Helen Keller and park space for blind visitors. The continuous and fluid form of the piece of my jewelry connects the inner ear with the outer world, that becomes the protection of the unprivileged organ and redefines the relationship between surface and embodiment. The rendering with tableware creates a setting that the unprevailed are the usually consumed (edible) ones, while the lighting adds on the lens that implies on the orientalist which sets discourse on Chuchuselected works [landscape] Rain Garden Design Critic: John WhitakerSpring 2022 | Landscape Graduate-level Elective &nbsp;St. Louis, MO Located along Delmar Blvd., in St. Louis, Missouri, the Hodiamont tracks in a long alley down in the West End neighborhood. Although the alley has existing planters along the tracks, it remains opportunities for a more cozy and welcome landscape space for the community.&nbsp; The proposal protects most of the plants on the sites, as well as the existing materiality including the playground, while creates a new curve pathway that better connects the space. Plants selected are a combination of ground covers, shrubs, and trees. The three types of mixes of ground covers are the most important plants that structures the flowing height, given the visitors a changing view with visions and colors when walking along the pathway. Chuchuselected works [architecture/landscape] Perplexing My Eyes AI trained psychogeography Critic: Karel KleinFall 2021 | Seminar &nbsp;St. Louis, MO Louis Aragon, along with Philippe Soupault and Andre Breton, was one of the founders of Surrealism, a literary, philosophical, and artistic movement developed during in the wake of World War I. Set forth in Andre Breton’s 1924 Manifesto, and influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of the unconscious, Surrealism sought to emancipate thought, language, and experience from the constraints of rationalism. Paris Peasant, written by Louis Aragon in 1926, is considered one of the central works of Surrealism. Not purely a work of automatic writing, the book is a lyrical, literary, and chance reconstruction of Paris—its streets, inhabitants, and its architecture—a surrealist psychogeography. This seminar used Aragon’s Paris Peasant as a loose guide for how to look at and analogously capture the city of St. Louis. Beginning with StyleGAN scripting, we experimented with the ways in which mis-training, artificial intelligence produces a kind of image-rich “knowledge” that appears more like an AI subconscious than Several times I became lost as I chased the trace of the most reddish aspen leaf along the Skinker trail… So took great pains to familiarize myself with the topography.&nbsp; It can be abnormally misleading. I tried to determine why this was the case, instead of taking pleasure, as I had before,&nbsp; in wandering wherever my curiosity took me. &nbsp; I walked, walked, and still walked… It remained nevertheless to explain the specific strangeness of these safe havens within the forest. It occurred to me that, rather than humans,&nbsp; once could shadow the simulacra that resemble them. It is the streetlight, as I finally realized. They vanished without warning, metamorphosing into the tree branches, growing, budding, merging with the daylight, perplexing my eyes.&nbsp; They leaped skyward and clasped wildly to the canopy.&nbsp; Capacious,&nbsp; yet enfolding the sunny spot of dappled light, mimicking my hallucinated daydream. Chuchuselected works [landscape/anthropology] Cementland a mini ethnography research Critic: Dr. Samuel Shear, Michael AllenSpring 2022 &nbsp;St. Louis, MO Cementland represents the failure of not just one dreamworld—the early- to mid-20th century American dream supported by the mechanisms of industrial capitalism—but also the failure of a dreamworld that was intended to rise from the ruins of industrial capitalism. Bob Cassilly’s Cementland theme park was designed as an imagination of an alternative use for the ruins left behind by the abandoned factory; rather than let the ruins fester and become reclaimed by the natural world, he imagined a space in which people could escape from the vulgarities, ambiguities, and restrictions of everyday life. But Cassilly’s dream more or less died when Cassilly himself died, leaving behind a ruin within a ruin.Cementland may currently appear as a wasted potential to some, but to others, it may simply be a dream that is not dead but has not yet been realized. It will take others outside of Cassilly to move in that direction. After the industrial cement factory closed, the 54-acre plot of land became an area for construction companies to dump dirt and other materials. Cassilly welcomed this material as he repurposed it with his guiding hand of innovation and excitement for unexpected purpose. In our field visit, we found that since Cassilly’s death, Cementland has become a dumping ground for various other materials. Couches, some intact and some displaying springs, dot one entrance along with unexpected items such as a boat and a tricycle. Ecological design, especially on public land, requires alignment of various values, desires, and systems. One factor that limits the cultivation of a more ecological urbanism is the knowledge gap about urban ecological systems. Moreover, the histogram offers a comparison of the carbon storage amount between the soil and atmosphere, animals, and plants, showing the advantage of the soil sequestration strategy.
